‘More than just a shoe’ – superfit hosted an expert talk on the future of children’s shoes

June 2nd, 2025

Graz, May 2025 . What will the ideal children’s shoe of the future look like? What requirements do modern parents have – and how can manufacturers and specialist retailers fulfil them? These and other challenging questions were the focus of an interdisciplinary expert talk at the headquarters of legero united in Graz, the manufacturer of the children’s shoe brand superfit. Participants included representatives from specialist retailers, legero united CEO Stefan Stolitzka, Vessela Carrillo, Head of the Business Unit superfit, and the renowned paediatric orthopaedic surgeon Dr Zwick.

Children’s shoes as all-rounders
One key conclusion: children’s shoes today have to do far more than just look good. They accompany children as they grow, play and learn – and must be functional, comfortable and versatile. ‘Every child’s foot is different – a precise fit is medically essential,’ emphasised Dr Zwick.

Focus on barefoot shoes
Another focus of the discussion: the trend towards barefoot-inspired shoes. While there is great interest amonst consumers, there is often a lack of well-founded information, according to the experts. Manufacturers and specialist retailers are particularly in demand here as an advisory body. superfit therefore develops its barefoot models in close cooperation with Dr Zwick and relies on his specialist expertise. ‘Parents need guidance – and manufacturers and retailers must be able to provide this,’ concluded the panellists.

Specialist retailers remain an anchor of trust
Many parents rely on personalised advice, especially when making their first purchase. The increasing involvement of children in the choice of shoes also places new demands on the expertise of retailers. In addition to fit and functionality, sustainability is also becoming increasingly important. superfit designs ist collections on child-friendly lasts and only with certified materials. CO₂ calculations are implemented already in the design phase. ‘Sustainability is not just a trend for us, it’s a mindset,’ says Vessela Carrillo.

Sharing responsibility
‘A child’s shoe is a piece of responsibility – for healthy development, for the environment and for a better future,’ summarised CEO Stefan Stolitzka. A representative of the specialised retail added: ‘We have an obligation to draw attention to these important issues. After all, it’s not just about selling a product, but about accompanying our customers.’
